Named ‘Frankenmeat’ by critics, laboratory grown meat has caused quite a stir recently with a number of companies investing in perfecting meat cloned from animal cells. The idea of meat or fish that has been grown in a petri dish may turn your stomach, but could this in-vitro grown meat reduce the suffering of millions of animals around the world who are slaughtered for meat every year? Those people who are reluctant to give up meat may be more likely to switch to a labgrown alternative if the taste and price is right.
Growing food in a dish may seem a little futuristic, but it is possible. To date, beef, chicken and duck have all been successfully cultured and Hampton Creek foods have said that their cultured chicken will be on the market this year.
