The African wild dog, or painted wolf, is the most effective predator in the world, but don’t be fooled — on the whole, they are a surprisingly non-aggressive, and extremely social species. Packs have been seen to share food with one another, and even to assist weak or ill members. In most cases the pack, rather than the individual, is considered the basic unit within the population. The wild dogs Latin name means ‘painted wolf’, which refers to their irregular and mottled coat, made up of patches of white, black, brown, red and yellow fur.
