Actor, model, writer and director Mark Haldor spoke to Vegan Life about his love affair with vegan food

Mark’s Birmingham accent is fairly soft after four years in London. He has an easy smile, olive skin and friendly eyes as he shakes my hand, quite firmly. His unusual look is striking and it is understandable that most people think that he is Swedish.

He laughs as I ask him about his heritage — a common question apparently — and tells me that he is, in fact, 100 per cent British despite his long blond hair and angular cheekbones.

It is probably this individual look which got him his first acting job on the 2012 film Snow White and The Huntsman starring Liam Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron. He laughs again when I ask him about his role: “Blink and you’ll miss me.”

This moment wasn’t merely a fleeting taste of fame for Mark though; he says that being on the set for Snow White and The Huntsman proved to him that he was finally in the right place after years of modelling and graphic design. Mark said: “The thing I took away from [Snow White] is that I didn’t feel daunted by it all like I thought I would. I knew that it was what I wanted to do.”

Every morning I sit down at my desk with an almond milk Earl Grey (in my red starry mug) and read emails, press releases and the latest news. It continues to amaze me that so much of what I read in the mainstream media is relevant to veganism. Negative articles about vegans and veganism seem to be diminishing to be replaced with pieces highlighting the benefits to the environment, animal welfare and our health. The number of businesses embracing compassion and removing animal products from their products, as well as making sure they are cruelty-free, is astounding. With this in mind, we have brought you a business feature which I am really excited about. We have spoken to Stephanie Redcross who founded a vegan marketing, consulting and coaching company to advise entrepreneurs and professionals about how to run their businesses without compromising their core values. There has been an explosion of small vegan enterprises over the last few years and there are still so many gaps in the market — if you have an idea for a vegan product or service which you want to make a reality, this feature is perfect for you. We have also noticed that the number of people taking part in animal tourism has increased recently. You may have seen pictures of people visiting swimming pigs in the Bahamas and with the clear sparkling water and cloudless blue skies you would be forgiven for thinking that this looked like paradise. Unfortunately, these pigs do not live the life of luxury that you may expect and it is so sad, though not surprising, that in 2017 tourism still exploits animals for commercial gain. Finally, we have some incredible recipes for you in this issue including a personal favourite, scones with cream and jam, and a whole host of fun Halloween recipes which you can make with your kids or, if you’re a big kid like me, for yourself! Have a happy Halloween and make sure you stock up on some vegan sweets for those trick or treaters!
