Is it a good idea to add insoles into my trainers, to make them last longer?
Whether manufacturers advise you that your running shoes should last 300 or 500 miles, will adding insoles prolong their life?
Bente Rewse-Smith, biomechanics specialist and founder of enertor. com shock absorbing and energy returning running insoles
The simple answer is yes, for the following reasons: Firstly, shoe manufacturers, even with the most expensive trainers, spend their money on the soles and the uppers of the shoes but spend very little on the insoles, resulting in a thin layer of material, usually EVA, for insoles. EVA feels good when you put the shoes on in a shop, but it tends to ‘bottom out’ within a month of running. The material tends to compress meaning that you are not getting the proper protection and support. Secondly, one of the main purposes of trainers is to provide support while running. As trainers wear down on the soles and the uppers become looser, you will be getting less support. Using good quality insoles to help provide that support means your trainers will last longer. Good quality insoles, such as Enertor, typically last over 1,000 road miles.
