I named my house after a famous jockey, it only seemed right

Grace Craddock turned her cottage from a hairdressing salon into a comfortable home

Grace Craddock and her brother and sister were baffled when on Christmas Day 2013 their father, dressed to the nines in a Santa suit, handed them all a little box each with a key inside. ‘We already had a car each so we couldn’t think what the keys were for,’ says Grace. They could hardly believe it when dad announced he’d bought them each a house. ‘It was all so emotional – we were laughing and crying, hugs all round. It was such a shock,’ says Grace. ‘After we’d recovered we spent Christmas afternoon driving round to see the houses.’

It all came about because Grace’s father, Robin, had bought himself a racehorse for a mere 6,000 euros and it turned out to be such a brilliant racer, winning lots of cups and money, that he was able to sell it on for a huge amount of money, ‘so he could treat us all to our own homes,’ says Grace.

Grace’s family are friends with the owner of Abbey kitchens in Winchcombe, which is how grace came to buy a beautiful bespoke kitchen painted in skylight 205 by Farrow & Ball, with unistone Bianca Carrara quartz worktops. The kitchen began as two kitchenettes and had a horrible plastic roof and a red shiny lino floor. it now has a solid roof with a lantern to let in the light and French windows overlooking the courtyard
