SPEARS OF JOY

Asparagus has always commanded a high price in the shops, yet it is very easy to grow. KG editor Steve Ott explains how, with little patience, you can produce your own high-quality harvest hats

The berries on female plants are pretty but give rise to unwanted seedlings

PLANT: Late March – late May

HARVEST: Mid-April – mid-June

Raised beds are perfect for this crop

TOP TIP

Take care to remove the roots of any perennial weeds prior to planting. On new or weedy sites it is worth covering the bed for a year with soil-covering fabric to ensure a weed-free patch for planting.

Asparagus used to be the preserve of high-class restaurants, but is now much more widely available and has become a popular pickyour- own crop. The result is that more people than ever are enjoying the distinctive delights of spring fresh asparagus spears. Yet it can still be expensive to buy and by supplying the plants with just a few simple needs you’ll soon be growing your own.
