This painting was inspired by a vase of tulips. I did not want to portray these flowers in a still-life setting, but rather as they may have appeared growing in a sunny field with the wind ruffling their petals. So they were painted through careful observation, but the background came from my imagination, deliberately obscure to capture a sense of an idealised setting.
