Ubuntu Unity 22.10
Nate Drake takes you on a trip down memory lane as the Unity Desktop makes its official comeback to Ubuntu.
IN BRIEF
Ubuntu Unity 22.10 marks its first release as an official flavour. After languishing in development purgatory, the Unity 7 desktop interface is back with a vengeance. Coupled with a new port of the Yaru theme and Unity Tweak tool, users have granular control over the interface and can launch apps and files with the minimum of clicks and keystrokes.

Controversial is the best way to describe the Unity Desktop environment. Pioneered in 2010 as an alternative to Gnome, Unity divided opinion. Many praised the slick interface, including a top menu bar, a handy app launcher and Dash, which could search your files and the internet. This caused controversy in 2012 when privacy advocates discovered some search queries were being sent to Amazon. In 2017, Canonical ceased official development of the Unity desktop environment and switched to Gnome 3.
