The Skatalites
THE SKATALITE!
MUSIC ON VINYL
LONG LIVE VINYL EDITOR’S CHOICE
In a parallel universe, the jazz-trained musicians who emerged from Kingston’s Alpha School For Boys in the early 60s would have been signed by Blue Note and had mythologising artwork designed by Reid Miles. Had this happened, then Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso (tenor sax), Baba Brooks (trumpet), Jackie Mittoo (piano), Jerome Hinds (guitar), Lloyd Brevett (bass) and Lloyd Knibb (drums) would be the household names they deserve to be. As it is, the boys jobbed away on Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One label as The Skatalites and occasionally their own names on Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle. This wonderful collection is from the latter and is essential for any ska fan. Highlights include Yard Broom, Dan-De-Lion and Eastern Standard Time, all graced by Don Drummond’s mournful trombone.
