How to import and manage your personal audio collection
Importing a lot of CDs? Choose ‘Import CD and Eject’ in Music > Settings > ‘When a CD is inserted’.
With vinyl records now outsellingCDs, and streaming services thrashing both, your optical disc based music collection might feel like it’s time has come and gone. Apple is partly to blame, of course. While it didn’t invent the digital audio player (DAP), it certainly popularised it, with various flavours of iPod selling in their millions since the very first model promised ‘1,000 songs in your pocket’ when it launched in 2001.
With the iPhone, iPad, Mac and even the Apple Watch capable of storing more songs than entire music collections, it’s no surprise that old media formats have largely fallen out of favour. Audio streaming services account for the majority of music listening now – Apple Music gives you access to hundreds of thousands of songs in an instant from almost any period in recorded music history – all you need is an internet connection, and a valid subscription.
