> Trust encryption in Messages
Is it safe to send sensitive information like bank account details using Messages?
Yes, as the iMessage service is end–to– end encrypted and now has additional protection to ensure that no one can intercept any information you send between two Messages clients. When one or both are using SMS text, though, their contents don’t benefit from the same protections.
Since 2019, iMessage has used Elliptic Curve encryption, the most robust form available to protect from conventional attack, and Macs with T2 or Apple silicon chips protect their private keys in the Secure Enclave.
Apple has steadily introduced additional protections, most recently in Contact Key Verification, although that can only be adopted if all your Macs and devices are using the current versions of macOS, iPadOS, iOS and watchOS. You can enable this feature in your device’s Settings.
