UNLESS YOU’VE DECIDED to deck or pave your outdoor space, your yard will require maintenance. That means mowing the lawn and ensuring the flowers are watered. Yet, it’s time away from simply relaxing and enjoying your beautiful plot.

Turn to technology! If your patch of green grass is fairly sizable, a robot lawnmower may be a sound investment.

They can be set up to regularly cut your grass while avoiding obstacles, including flower beds, but before you take the plunge, you need to decide if you want one with boundary wires (which requires extra effort), or one that uses GPS systems. Each will ensure that your device stays within the lawn perimeter. In either case, you’ll get the mower itself and a base station to recharge the device’s lithium– ion battery. If it can be controlled by an app, you’ll also be able to set schedules, perform ad–hoc cuts, or determine grass lengths without having to use on–device controls. An app may even enable you to see how the mower is performing, and alert you to potential problems or theft. Some will let you create cutting zones for increased control.
