The HDMI 2.2 standard

How does the new version of HDMI differ from the current standard?

Future Macs could come with HDMI 2.2, offering even sharper images and more detail.

HOW IT WORKS

YOU WILL LEARN

What HDMI 2.2 does, why it’s better than HDMI 2.1, and what you’ll need to use it

KEY FACT

As well as HDMI, there’s a digital connection standard called DisplayPort. On the Mac mini with M4 Pro, DisplayPort 2.1 is supported via Thunderbolt 5, and allows up to three 6K monitors at 60Hz to be connected. DisplayPort 2.1 offers a maximum bandwidth of 80Gbps, and supports 4K resolution at 120Hz or 8K at 60Hz — a lower refresh rate than offered by HDMI 2.2.

MOVE OVER HDMI 2.1! There’s a new video cable standard in town — HDMI 2.2 — and it’s about to turn up the quality dial to unprecedented levels. Set to make a big difference to the images you’ll see on televisions and monitors in the future, it was announced by the HDMI Forum at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. But to discover why you should be excited and to better understand what it does, it’s worth rewinding a little.
