IT CAN’T BE Easy creating new features for apps that have been around for a long time. And BBEdit has been around for a very long time. Having debuted in 1992, it not only predates Intel Macs but also PowerPC Apple gear. Yet some things about this veteran text editor haven’t changed.
BBEdit still has an outrageous selection of tools for manipulating text, and it remains blazingly fast. Reviewers were furnished with a 41MB Hex dump and invited to perform a search and replace. The app then almost instantly found nearly 800,000 instances of a term and replaced them in a fraction of a second — and that was on an M1 Mac. It barely breaks a sweat with much, much larger files, too.
