Keep your Mac safe from harm by strengthening its core security

HE BEST SECURITY is multilayered. With security software, the antivirus component provides a last line of defense; look for packages with additional protections, such as against dangerous websites and scam emails.
Also avoid installing software from suspicious sources (see right) and get into the habit of choosing New > New Private Window in Safari to hide your browsing history from trackers (see p28). If your Mac supports it, enable its Touch ID feature for secure logins.
Finally, consider upgrading to iCloud+ to unlock extra security features — the guides opposite reveal what’s available.
Install new software with care
Desperate to try a new application? Don’t rush into making a potentially costly mistake. First, make sure it’s downloaded from a reputable source: ideally the App Store or the program’s official website. If it’s the latter, make sure you type the web address correctly — “us.norton.com” and not “us.norton.co” for example.
