NO NEED TO CONSOLE YOURSELF

A LOT HAS CHANGED
since we did our last “Console Killer” cover build in December 2020, as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles launched and subsequently remained sold out through much of 2021. I encourage any PC historians to go back and have a read—I actually laughed out loud when I saw our description of the RX 5500 XT, at $210, as “sensibly priced.” Today, we’d describe that as an absolute bargain, given the cheapest current-gen AMD card, the RX 7600, costs $270. Combining that with an AMD Ryzen 3 3100 for $99, we put what was then a “next-gen console killer” system together for $1,149—a lot more than a $500 PS5, but pretty cost effective.
