WHEN IT COMES to SSDs, it’s all too easy to become obsessed with numbers. The latest PCIe Gen 4 drives knock out six or seven gigabytes per second of raw bandwidth. Not long ago, figures like that wouldn’t have looked too shabby for RAM or system memory, let alone storage.
Thing is, there’s a lot more to storage performance than peak throughput. That’s good news for the new SK Hynix Gold P31, an M.2 NVMe SSD sampled here in its 1TB version. It makes do with a quad-lane PCIe Gen 3 interface, limiting peak theoretical performance to 4GB/s rather than the 8GB/s of Gen 4 drives.
