POPPY
WITCH FEVER O2 INSTITUTE, BIRMINGHAM
Boston’s genre-stirring crossover queen heats the cauldron to boiling point
Poppy: angelic with an edge
KATJA OGRIN
WITH HUGE HOOKS, headbanging tempos and sufficient fuzz to thrill any stoner rock aficionado, WITCH FEVER’S unapologetic brand of fuck-you energy and surrealist lyrical imagery makes them a powerful act to witness live. Amy Walpole’s passionate, gravel-laced vocals are as empowering as they are captivating. I Saw You Dancing and Reincarnate see the Mancunian doom punks punching the patriarchy in the face with seething aplomb, as ominous basslines and grinding riffs fuse to create an air of menace.
It’s been a long journey for musical shapeshifter POPPY. From going viral with a cotton-candy ASMR video to the scintillating blend of 90s alt rock and daydream pop on 2021’s Flux, tonight’s performance is no different in its hair-raising crescendo of contrasts, feeling like a playful representation of a post-genre world in which anyone can be anything.
