Former tech-metal overlords set their sights on going bigger, proggier and catchier than ever before

ALMOST FIVE YEARS ago, Tesseract released Sonder and stepped away from the tech-metal scene that had long been their home. A broader, more instantly catchy and straightforward album, it showed a real maturity and evolution to their songwriting, opening the door to an appeal beyond the scene that spawned them. Sets at Download, Bloodstock and ArcTanGent, as well as support slots with everyone from Dream Theater to Trivium and Megadeth showed they were aiming to pull in as many new fans as possible. With a new album on the horizon, we spoke to vocalist Dan Tompkins and bassist Amos Williams about where they’re going next.
