Big | Brave: the captivating voice of resistance
Nature Morte
THRILL JOCKEY
Heavy rebel music on the righteous side of history
THERE WAS ALWAYS something subversive about Big | Brave. Ever since 2014’s Feral Verdure, the Quebec trio have been embraced by the doom and post-metal scenes, while casually making any such affiliations entirely redundant. Where most lumbering, riff-based heaviness comes with a side-order of rock’n’roll machismo, Big | Brave songs have always felt like righteous howls on behalf of the downtrodden, with Robin Wattie’s extraordinary voice as their fraught but tender epicentre. Experimental by default as much as by design, each successive album has only reinforced the band’s uniqueness, and Nature Morte is no different.
