DAVE LOWERY’S TOP TIPS
Notes from the Workshop
EVERYTHING DOWN BELOW
Unlike some modellers, I don’t find the building of carriage or multiple unit underframes the most exciting elements of construction. But, if all those lumps and bumps weren’t there, there would just be an unsightly gap!
In fact, it’s rare that I find this part of kit building satisfying, but the etched parts for this underframe were a joy to fold up and assemble, with whitemetal castings also supplied for air tanks, exhaust silencers, fuseboxes and sundry other bits and bobs.
The kit in question is the ‘O’ gauge Class 158 which has featured in previous instalments, which is produced by Peter Clark (www.peterclarkkits.com), and during the course of these past few months I’ve been tackling the bogies and underframe .
Several important pieces of information are critical to getting the underframe right. Included in the kit is an excellent diagram of where the tanks, battery boxes and all the other gubbins are located. However, having a good selection of prototype images on hand is essential, so you can gain a better understanding of how the parts are aligned.
