Backscene
A few days’ break and, needless to say, modelling inspiration strikes Chris Leigh. Inevitably, frustration follows…
The 08.57 to Shrewsbury creeps towards the half-barrier level crossing as it departs Bucknell on April 28, formed of two Class 153 railcars, the leading one being 153362 and the rear a ‘1539xx’‐series car. The holiday-let accommodation is on the left.
CHRIS LEIGH
Earlier in the year I wrote a feature for Steam World magazine, about the Central Wales line, from Shrewsbury to Swansea. I travelled on it with two friends in 1967. At least we travelled from Builth Road High Level to Llandeilo, which took us over Sugarloaf Summit and Cynghordy Viaduct which, we reckoned, would be the best section. It’s too long to cover the full length and back in a reasonable day’s travelling. As a bonus, we got to ride a Swindon cross-country unit (Class 120). It would still be my first choice DMU for a ready-to-run model but most manufacturers have run scared of it, presumably because there isn’t a preserved one to scan.
