BELLA UNION. CD/DL/LP
BY THEIR very nature, songs revisiting past abuses tend not to be upbeat affairs – therapeutic for their singers but often heavy going for the listener. Through the years, artists have tackled their darkest moments in radically different ways: Sinéad O’Connor by howling the pain of her mother’s cruelty over the trancey beats of Fire On Babylon; Terry Hall in the Fun Boy Three’s Well Fancy That! relating (via Brechtian pop) the tale of a teacher turning “sex into crime” on a school trip to France.
