“OH JESUS, what have we done?” isn’t necessarily the response bands dream of having when they listen back over three months of work on their new record. For Los Angeles’ modern psychedelicists Wand, though, it was a sign that their sixth album, Vertigo, was on the right track. Gearing up for their first release since 2019’s Laughing Matter, singer and guitarist Cory Hanson, drummer Evan Burrows and guitarist Robert Cody decided to rethink their approach. “We decided we’re not going to write songs,” explains Hanson. “We’re just going to go into the studio and record. We’re going to set up mikes and come in with absolutely no music and no ideas and just play freely.”
