Your Dog  |  Your Dog May 2026
Ladies and gentlemen, I have two huge pieces of news to share. Firstly I now consider myself fully recovered from the chaos of Crufts. I’m not proud to admit that it has taken me over two weeks to do so at the ripe age of 23, but here we are.
Secondly, we have officially made it out the trenches of winter, and the sun is finally out. Gone are the days of 4pm darkness, wearing several layers, and not being able to pinpoint the location of your dog in that muddy, dark field. Like all changes of the season, it doesn’t come without some challenges to our dog’s wellbeing. Take a look at Jacqueline Boyd’s feature (page 24) with five simple steps to follow to keep your dog cool during the hotter months.
Speaking of being on the move, that’s the next stage of Crumpet’s guide dog training as he swaps rural Perthshire for a more built-up area (page 31). Spolier: we’re pleased to report he reacted really well!
Elsewhere, Andrea McHugh addresses the often forgotten but vital importance of making provisions for your dog in the event of an emergency (page 21) and how the Dogs Trust can be of assistance. We also look at the often-forgotten work of the British Transport Police Dog Unit (page 36). It’s the type of dog-job that makes you take a look at your own canine companion and try your absolute hardest to not sigh.
All this alongside what to do if your dog refuses to eat (page 26), the simply magnificent Hovawart (Page 40), and why you should consider a summer break in Norfolk (Page 50) – a county that offers a collective mix of dog-friendly activities. There’s something for everyone.
