WEST Highland businessman Angus MacDonald was the speaker at Lochaber Rotary Club’s business lunch meeting on Wednesday April 25.
Mr MacDonald, of Spean Bridge, has a background in business finance and publishing, but sold these interests in 2007, and now heads up three successful businesses – wind turbines, education publishing and a fast growing recycling enterprise that has captured all NHS Scotland’s waste management contracts, as well as that of most of Scotland’s major airports. Members heard Mr MacDonald was born and raised in the West Highlands and, thanks to ScotRail’s sleeper service, is able to spend three working days in London and the rest of his week in Lochaber.
‘Fort William is in a good place just now. The economy is growing and, as long as we put our emphasis on quality, we will win through,’ he said. ‘Businesses need to train their staff well, pay them well and provide career opportunities that will keep our young folk in Lochaber.’ With the increasingly crowded sunshine holiday resorts abroad, many people are turning to active holidays in more remote locations and Mr MacDonald said the Highlands are well-placed to meet this demand.
