Tancredi Rossini
This early Rossini opera seria (1813) is dramaturgically creaky, but it has some splendid music, and numerous opportunities for the three principals to display their pyrotechnical skill

Dying tryst: Stephanie Blythe as Tancredi and Brenda Rae as Amenaide
At Opera Philadelphia, the powerhouse mezzo Stephanie Blythe tackled the title role of Tancredi. The schematic production, directed by Emilio Sagi, with sets by Daniel Bianco and lighting by Eduardo Bravo, came from the Opéra de Lausanne and the Teatro Municipal de Santiago. It updates the medieval conflict (in which Syracuse is beset by internal strife as well as the Byzantine Empire and the Saracens) to circa 1910, with World War I impending.
