Paul Hale surveys the organs of Bristol Cathedral, following the recent restoration by Harrison & Harrison. J. S. Bach’s monumental Well-Tempered Clavier is given a radical rethinking by Chris Benton, who uses chromatic inversion to create new masterpieces. Martin Schmeding offers an important survey of Robert Schumann’s organ works, examining his experience of the organ and pedal piano. A relatively unknown Caribbean-born organist-composer, Edward Margetson, is introduced by Maria Gajraj from Montreal’s McGill University, continuing our series of student essays. Two new short columns start this year: ‘The Organ-Builders’, featuring Andrew Caskie from Nicholsons, and ‘In the Recording Booth’, featuring recording engineer Adaq Khan. We’re also delighted to welcome Graeme Kay, who starts a regular column on the organ world around the globe.
