Outdoor Photography  |  May 2009
For the last few weeks I have been luxuriating in Robert Macfarlane’s wonderful book The Wild Places. Reading his evocative account of wildness in Britain is like stepping into the landscape and gulping down fresh air by the lung full. In 15 distinct chapters he travels through habitats from river-mouth to ridge, salt marsh and beech wood. Slowly, as the book develops, the reader is encouraged to awaken his/her senses and experience the taste, smell and touch of the landscape in all its shocking rawness. Towards the end of a chapter on holloways (ancient sunken roads) Macfarlane introduces the idea of a mental map of wild places. He suggests that we each have a list of private experiences with the landscape locked away in our memory: it might be the feeling of wet moss beneath our feet, the dancing shadow of a tree on grass or, in his case, a steep-sided ditch in Nottinghamshire!
