THE BEST IMAGERY FROM THE SINWP BIRD OF PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR
01 LOOK INTO MY EYES BY TOM MCDONNELL
2ND PLACE SINWP BPOTY
“After talking to local land owners I found a brilliant spot close to home in the Glens of Antrim where I was told I might find red grouse. Visiting often, I soon confirmed that they were indeed there, so one morning I parked in a layby and the birds were flying across the road back and forth. I decided to get out of the car and the birds did not seem to care about my presence. One of the birds exploded from the heather right towards me and I was lucky to get this shot looking right down the lens barrel.”

02 ROCK PTARMIGAN BY ALEXANDER PERMAIN
HIGHLY COMMENDED SINWP BPOTY
“The rock ptarmigan was one of my ‘target’ species to photograph when visiting Iceland in summer 2023. An uncommon bird, however, it can be difficult to spot during the summer, once their white plumage moults into a dappled greyish brown. After spending most of our trip driving through vast lava fields, we took a trip to the Icelandic coastline where the terrain changed – as did the photographic opportunities. We came across this rock ptarmigan showing magnificently in the pouring rain. A welcome turn of the head from the bird established eye contact and showed off this species in all of its natural beauty.”
