X-ray vision
My friend gets her pony’s hooves X-rayed every year.
Should I do this?
Charlie Tomlinson Vet at Hale Equine Vets, answers
It’s not vital to get your pony’s feet X-rayed regularly, however there are some benefits if you do. It’s a good idea if your farrier has any concerns about the way your pony’s hooves are growing or to monitor a disease such as laminitis.
Vets sometimes perform what’s known as a foot balance X-ray to help your farrier see how the bones in your pony’s feet are positioned. This can help them alter the way they trim his hooves and manage issues such as flat feet. X-rays can also help prevent future lameness issues, because they’ll show what you can’t see from the outside.
Laying foundations
What are some good ways to bond with my new pony?
It’s important that you start to build a connection with your new pony as soon as you can. That way, he’ll settle into his new home more quickly and you’ll know him better when you ride. Spend time grooming him and getting to know his fave itchy spots. Why not try giving him a massage to help relax him, too? You could also offer him a couple of yummy treats, such as carrots, apples or even a swede to play with. That way, he’ll associate you with nice things – don’t give him too many snacks though, especially if he’s prone to weight gain.
