Mounted police officers have been equipped with front and rear cameras in an attempt to tackle dangerous driving. Following concerns from local horse riders, the Avon and Somerset Police has given its mounted section wide-angled cameras that are designed to capture everything while they’re out monitoring the roads.
The aim is to be able capture footage that could provide evidence against reckless drivers. The police hope that, as word of the cameras gets out, drivers will think twice before driving past horses at speed. Sergeant Ed Amor of Avon and Somerset’s mounted section said: “Most of us have either witnessed or received reports about a number of close calls involving motorists and riders”. The police hope to see good results and, if drivers wonder if a horse and rider could be wearing a camera, it might make all the difference.
