DRIVING ON THE A272’s wandering west-east route through parts of Hampshire, Sussex and the South Downs National Park harks back to those innocent days of the mid-20th century when people more often drove for pleasure.
Long-distance traffic takes the A27 and M27, linking the important coastal towns and ports, which has left the A272 largely free of upgrades. It has three short sections of dual carriageway, between Petworth and Midhurst, and some very narrow sections, in particular through Petworth; but in the main, this is a scenic drive through beautiful countryside and villages.
