INVERTEBRATE FOCUS

There are a number of ways in which invertebrates seek to avoid predators, and here is a leaf-mimic katydid photographed in Ecuador’s rainforest. Note how it is not just its body shape or indeed its colour that is suggestive of a fallen leaf. It even has an apparent vein running down the centre of its back, and its body is tilted at an angle too, as a means of increasing the level of deception.
