In the mottled evening sunlight, I stand by the side of the Champs-Élysées, waiting for the first harbingers of the race to pass me for one last time. At one end is the Arc de Triomphe, through which the massive draping bloom of the French flag can be seen. At the other, the Tuileries, the gilded tip of its obelisk casting a glare in fine point. It occurs to me that this will all be over soon.
