DAN AVIDAN MIGHT have had the weirdest career of any prog musician in history. The New Jersey-born 43-year-old began his journey cycling through a host of East Coast rock bands, before finding his niche in comedy synthpop duo Ninja Sex Party. In the 13 years since, he’s adopted the stage persona of Danny Sexbang: a sex-obsessed Jewish superhero flanked by keyboardist and serial killer Ninja Brian. The band’s viral success was amplified when Avidan joined the YouTube comedy channel Game Grumps in 2013, which now boasts more than five million subscribers. His niche is in the humorous and the ridiculous yet, talking to him, it’s swiftly apparent that he’s driven to be taken seriously as a musician.
