Katatonia’s smooth dark progginess delights the crowd.

“There’s so much joy amid the sorrow, the likes of which Katatonia haven’t expressed for quite some time.”
Some pairings just belong together. Fish and chips. Hammer and nails. Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The Katatonia co-founders had been making music for 35 years until, back in the spring, it was announced that they’d parted ways under seemingly acrimonious circumstances. As much as the schism shocked fans, the dark prog veterans soldiered on, with Renkse hiring new guitarists Sebastian Svalland and Nico Elgstrand before releasing the magnificently miserable Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State. Their show at a near-sold-out Electric Ballroom is the first UK date of their first European tour sans Nyström, so no one can really say what kind of form the band will be in tonight.
