TRANSPORT FOR THE NORTH
A Strategic Transport Plan to Transform
the North
Barry White Chief Executive of Transport for the North
The North of England is home to 16 million people, but fewer than 10,000 of them live within a 60 minute commute of four or more major cities. When you consider that commuters as far afield as Folkestone, Swindon and Northampton can access central London in less than an hour, the scale of the disparity in connectivity between our cities is clear for all to see. But this isn’t simply a problem of convenience. On all of the key economic measures, the North is failing to realise its potential. For example, economic value per person (GVA) lags 25% below the English average and our income per person is £7,500 less. Revolutionising our transport infrastructure is key to the North’s future prosperity.
