Do you hear that? That low grumbling is the ongoing discontent in the mental health community about the most recent changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the encyclopaedia of psychiatry. Published by the American Psychiatric Association, it outlines the definitions and criteria for what constitutes a mental health disorder. And while, technically, the rest of the world refers to another manual – the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) – as with other aspects of culture, the ripple effects of American life are often felt along the shores on this side of the pond.
