AW – Athletics Weekly Magazine  |  AW January 2025
The new issue of AW, out on January 2, looks ahead to another important year for athletics.
With the Olympics now in the rearview mirror, the world’s best athletes are working towards new goals, with the Tokyo World Championships serving as the climax to 2025.
An athlete who likes to scare herself by aiming high is Sifan Hassan. This month’s cover star, who pulled off an amazing medal-winning hat-trick at the Olympics by winning 5000m and 10,000m bronze, plus marathon gold, talks through the psychology behind pushing herself so hard and why she enjoys feeling the fear and doing it anyway when it comes not just to her running but also her life.
Another athlete with big ambitions is Josh Kerr. The Olympic 1500m silver medallist has a world title to defend this year and is also going to be a key player in the Grand Slam Track League. He explains why his desire to be the “best of his era” is driving him on.
The 2016 Olympic 1500m champion Matthew Centrowitz also knows a thing or two about middle-distance running. In this issue he reflects on his career but also the difficulties his compatriot Cole Hocker will now face after winning gold in Paris.
With a number of new projects that focus more on the track arriving on the calendar, there is a feeling of field events being marginalised. However, former world and Olympic triple jump champion Christian Taylor believes they have “the power to save themselves” with some fresh thinking.
Elsewhere in the issue, Cathal Dennehy lists the 25 wishes he has for athletics in 2025, the AW team take an early stab at predicting the World Championships medallists, plus Matt Majendie looks at the Athletics Integrity Unit’s fight against doping, Ben Bloom says the World Treadmill Championships is no joke and Katharine Merry gives her verdict on teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout.
The performance section features a coaching conversation with Liz McColgan, training insight from Laura Zialor and reviews of cushioned footwear.
