The May issue of ARH features Part 2 of Neville Pollard's account of Sydney's Metropolitan Goods Lines to mark the centenary of the opening of additional elements in May 1916. It reviews the changes that have occurred to the goods lines over the years, including closures, conversions to light rail and new infrastructure to separate freight trains from suburban passengers services.
Scott Martin and Philip Laird revisit the 1889 report by Major-General James Edwards on the defence implications of Australia's different colonial railway gauges and assess the effectiveness of various measures to create an effective national railway system.
Mike Quirk rounds off the issue with his account of the 1924 Gillens Siding railway accident in Queensland and the outcome of the subsequent inquiry into the accident.
