The February Australian Railway History opens with Part 1 of the railway career of Thomas Rhodes Firth, a significant official in the first 50 years of the New South Wales Railways. He arrived in Sydney in January 1859 as an engineer with contractors Peto, Brassey and Betts, before transferring to the Government Railways as a resident engineering supervising contractors building the main trunk railways to open up the inland. Part 1 covers Thomas' role in the construction of the Main Southern, Western and Illawarra Lines between 1863 and 1886.
Trevor Edmonds covers the Imperial Service Medals awarded to NSW Railwaymen from 1908 through to 1978 and analyses the rationale and procedures for these awards. Rodney Barrington recollects his travels from Adelaide to Port Pirie by passengers trains between May 1963 hrough to the 1970s and the issue rounds off with Chris Bangar's account ot eh 'O' gauge model railway exhibited at the Royal Easter Show by the NSW Railways from 1951 to 1967.
