Australian Railway History  |  Nov-16
The November issue of Australian Railway History opens with Part 2 of railway contractor William Watkins’ achievements in extending the Great Western Railway from Orange to Dubbo and what would become the North-West branch line from Werris Creek to Gunnedah in the 1870s. The lead article is Part 2 of Colin Bull’s account of Alan Parkinson’s railway career. It covers Alan’s appointment at Valley Heights in 1956 and describes his conversion of the depot to a maintenance facility for electric locomotives and freight wagons.
Mike Quirk’s account of the QR accident at Bundamba east of Ipswich in 1939 in which the drivers of both locomotives involved were killed and a short Explorer item on the attempt to derail the Royal Train to Orange at Bowenfels in April 1970 round off the issue.
