Glamour isn’t a word often associated with caravanning. Sometimes, it feels like we have to have a thick skin to holiday in a caravan, as lots of derogatory comments are thrown our way. The general public’s perception of our hobby really does seem to be about 40 years behind the times.
TV’s The Inbetweeners show bluntly sums up a typical view of caravanning:
Jay: "It's a sense of freedom you don't get with other holidays."
Will: "It's a sense of sh**ting in a bucket, in a cupboard, you don't get with other holidays." Little do they know that modern caravans offer all the comforts and luxuries of home, are often even cosier… and are usually located somewhere far more interesting and exciting!
So, far from being naff, caravanning offers the versatility to be exactly what you want it to be. This month we’ve selected 15 brilliantly British events that are gloriously glamorous and positively posh… but they don’t have to be extraordinarily expensive. Each one is ideally visited from your caravan, pitched at the event or nearby. Why spend a hyper-inflated £100-£200 on a hotel room for a night, when you can get a perfect pitch nearby for around £30? I’ve experienced seven of the events over the years, and each one offered an incredible atmosphere, the epitome of Englishness, or, in one case, sensationally Scottish!
