In the Autumn issue of Choir & Organ, the American choir The Crossing are featured as they celebrate 20 years of existence. Formed by a group of friends in Philadelphia, the choir and Donald Nally meet the editor who explores how they combines commercial success with a commitment to mirroring contemporary society.
Elsewhere, Leah Broad meets composer Emily Hazrati to learn about her music, which centres on environment, place and belonging and Megan Stellar meets the Manchester-based group, Kantos Chamber Choir, who deliver emotionally resonant performances and programmes. Our new music composer is Conrad Asman, who speaks to Matthew Power about his new choral work, written in collaboration with Rory Stewart.
As Jeremy Filsell and the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys in New York release a recording of Calvin Hampton’s choral and organ music, Filsell looks at the short life of the American composer, who made a significant contribution to sacred and organ music
In the organ features, Jonathan Ambrosino assesses a new organ from the Noack Organ Company for a seminary in Texas, which aims to encourage singing from its students. Chris Bragg then travels to Osnabrück, Germany, to examine a new creation by Flentrop Orgelbouw and Three new projects from Freiburger Orgelbau in southern Germany are illustrated by Paul Hale.
In the choral communities feature looking at amateur choirs, Clare Stevens explores the work of two online initiatives: WorldChoir and Choir of the Earth. Them, in the performance practice feature, Daniel Moult finds much to recommend in approachable organ music by Handel and Stanley.
