Classic Military Vehicle  |  #151 A27M Cromwell
I almost hate to admit that despite having observed the classic MV scene since 1993 (when I first
realised there was one), I still get that little tingle of excitement when something comes along that is rare or, better still, I’ve not seen before. Take for instance Rick Wedlock’s Cromwell, this month’s cover feature. I’d seen Cromwells in museums, but until July this year I’d never seen one moving. And, frankly, I’d rather see one vehicle moving in the open air than any number gathering dust in a museum. I was reminded of that tingle of excitement while preparing the photos for the feature. The photoshoot took place early one evening during the War and Peace Revival. I’d spent the day tramping round the gargantuan site and was thoroughly knackered, but getting the Cromwell more-or-less to myself banished any thought of aching muscles. At least for the 45 minutes or so we were posing the tank... and Rick in its turret. I hope you’ll agree that the photos came out well. It’s only a pity you can’t hear the sound of the Meteor engine or feel the blast of exhaust gasses
that accompanied the experience as we manoeuvred the tank around (and thanks to Shaun Hindle who piloted it while Rick was posing!). Mind you, that’s an experience few of us will be enjoying
if the Cromwell goes overseas; Rick is disposing of it to fund his next major project, a Churchill.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the Cromwell remains in the UK.
