Since they were established in 1987, every year the D&D Awards have highlighted the most outstanding people and productions on Italy’s stages, and the Best Italian talent abroad. At the centre of it all is our beloved art of dance, with all its different facets. Votes are cast only by those who are professional spectators – namely, this publication’s critics. In the issue you’ll find the winning names of 2022.
Within this atmosphere of beauty and sensory pleasure that art gives us, the past year also ends on a bitter note, namely the tragic number of femicides committed in Italy. More than a hundred, according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior. This issue features two female choreographers and artists who are keenly aware of the problem: Monica Casadei, who once again tackles gender-based violence in her latest, hard-hitting work CorpiViolati (ViolatedBodies); and Maud Le Pladec, director of the Centre Chorégraphique National d’Orleans, who has created choreographic manifestos with, and for, women.
There have been a number of recent premieres around the world, watched by our critics in this issue. They include Marcos Morau’s new version of “Sleeping Beauty” for Lyon Opera Ballet and John Neumeier‘s “Dona Nobis Pacem” for his Hamburg Ballet. We also have a feature about the tutu, a timeless garment; clothes don’t make the artist, wearing one of these says ballerina. It’s a story of transformation, creativity and tailoring, from the nineteenth century to the present day.
