The first recipe book I picked up was a yellow notebook with red corners I found in a kitchen drawer. My mum Julie filled it with handwritten recipes for scones, scotch pancakes, tea loaves and a brilliant carrot cake – the essentials for any Scottish mum.
Once my siblings and I were all at school, Mum went back to work. She had to juggle that with keeping house, keeping four kids entertained and loved, and investing in the lives of even more young people in our church. She didn’t have the time to show me around the kitchen, but she still taught me to bake – through her notebook. At the age of 17, in my final year of school and with a bit of spare time on my hands, I started working through Mum’s recipes.
