Welcome to our May issue! We ate far too many Easter eggs last month so we’re pleased to have this jam-packed, high-energy issue at our fingertips. Let’s get going…
This month’s cover interview is with Chris Johnson, a drummer who manages to hold down two gigs with some of the biggest music stars on the planet at the same time – the legendary Stevie Wonder and Rihanna. Chris tells us how he manages to keep both gigs going and the skills he needs to succeed.
Ilan Rubin (Nine Inch Nails, Paramore) tells us how it was to step into the shoes of Josh Freese at the tender age of 20 when he joined NIN… Radiohead’s Philip Selway has been busy with his second solo album and explains how it feels to relinquish the drum throne and be the frontman. Martin France looks back on working with the legendary Kenny Wheeler and discusses the latest album from his jazz/electronic group Spin Marvel. There’s a real treat in store too as Ian Palmer, Steve White and Pete Cater look ahead to what they expect from this year’s World’s Greatest Drummer event and chat about the massive influence of the star of the show, Steve Gadd.
Turning our attention through to the end of the year, we hope you’re ready for some big news because we’re excited to announce Mike Johnston as an artist for the 2015 London Drum Show. You can read about Mike’s LDS plans on page eight, and learn of some more cracking developments at this year’s biggest drum event. We also have part one of Pete Lockett’s tour diary from China, ghost note guest tuition from Jost Nickel, a Billy Cobham live review, an Aaron Spears clinic tour review, the chance to win a pair of weekend camping tickets to Download and all of our usual tuition, reviews, news and more. Phew!
