One of the most beautiful mammals in Africa, the zebra - that strange painted horse with black and white stripes - is one of those creatures that just blows your mind when you see one for the very first time. I spent eight days in Kenya, and five of those in the wildlife-rich Masai Mara. It was there that I came across these two male zebras in the middle of a fight. I thought they were involved in some friendly play, but I was wrong. Zebras are grouped into harems where there is one dominant male with many females and their foals in each group. All younger males wait until they are big enough to start their own harems. I soon realised that these two were fighting to establish their supremacy. The battle became very violent, and one started to bleed -1 could see it had been bitten on the neck and legs. They kept on fighting for a long time until, eventually, the injured male became exhausted and ran away, I assume fearing for his life. It was really thrilling to witness such an intense encounter. I was a little sad to see the animals get injured, but that’s the reality of raw nature.
